District Court Division

The District Court Division handles most of the misdemeanor cases that are prosecuted by the State’s Attorney’s Office. These cases include some of the following types of offenses: narcotics, burglaries, jailable traffic, thefts, trespasses, and assaults. The Division also has several specialty assignments and resources: a citizen screening division, mental health court, drug court, economic crimes, municipal infractions, and a DUI unit which also handles the non-felony fatalities. The District Court Division, staffed by two supervisors and thirteen attorneys, handle approximately one hundred thousand cases each year, thirty thousand of which are criminal cases.

The District Court Division has offices in Hyattsville and Upper Marlboro.

Domestic Violence

The Domestic Violence Unit is a specialized unit within the State’s Attorney’s Office that handles both misdemeanor and felony cases involving intimate partner relationships (married, dating, living together, or child in common). It is staffed with experienced attorneys and an administrative staff committed to providing support and resources to victims of abuse and to the thorough investigation and prosecution of domestic violence cases. Members of the unit are available to meet in person or by telephone to conduct interviews with victims and witnesses, discuss legal proceedings and provide information about the criminal justice system. Victim Advocates are also available to assist with identifying any support services that are needed and attend court with the attorneys to provide assistance and support in the courtroom to victims of abuse.

The Domestic Violence Unit also handles misdemeanor cases in the District Court involving intimate partner relationships (married, dating, living together, or child in common). It receives approximately 3,000 cases per year, all of which are reviewed by a dedicated staff committed to assisting victims of abuse and referred to specialized attorneys for prosecution.
