UPPER MARLBORO, MD – First Lady Leslie E. Johnson served as one of three panelists for the Greater Washington Women’s Network during the organization’s “Be Your Own Valentine:The Balancing Act to Self-Care” annual membership meeting. The First Lady was invited to speak about humanity services and giving back to the community.

First Lady Johnson’s discussion focused on what she termed “the seasons of her life” as a mother, career woman and current role as First Lady of Prince George’s County.

“When I began to reflect on my community service experience, it occurred to me that each season of my life opened new doors and provided wonderful service opportunities such as being involved with my three children and their activities while they were growing-up,” said First Lady Johnson.

“In my role as First Lady of Prince George’s County, I believe that when you find yourself in such a position you should not just occupy the position. I believe that you must work to make a positive difference in your community. I believe that you must touch people wherever they may be, find out what their needs are and strive to help them. I believe that I must serve my community and encourage others to do likewise,” said First Lady Johnson, while addressing the members of the GWWN.

First Lady Johnson is the founder of Prince George’s Women United to Help Others and Co-Founder of the Sister to Sister Empowerment Program and Leslie’s House.

The GWWN is an organization of diverse women working toward the advancement and promotion of its members through networking, education, and community service.

In addition, GWWN encourages women to help others while achieving their goals, advocates teamwork and believes dreams come true faster when working in twos. The goal of GWWN monthly meetings is to afford members and guests the opportunity to share their experiences, learn from one another, and make valuable business contacts through networking opportunities.

First Lady Leslie E. Johnson Recognized by the Maryland State Advisory Council on Gifted and Talented Education

UPPER MARLBORO, MD – First Lady, Mrs. Leslie E. Johnson, was recently recognized by the Maryland State Advisory Council on Gifted and Talented Education during a reception at the Miller Senate Office Building in Annapolis, Maryland. The Advisory Council is appointed by the State Superintendent of Education, Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick to encourage and support the education of students who have been identified as gifted and talented.

This year’s theme was “Invest in Gifted Education; Gifted Students Give Back.” Approximately 300 guests attended the awards ceremony. Mrs. Johnson received the coveted Business and Community Partnerships award for her support of Gifted Education and was among outstanding educators, students, and community members representing 14 school systems across the state.

Mrs. Johnson is a strong proponent of the county’s teachers and students who work hard and are committed to excellence everyday. She has noted on several occasions that the talented and gifted program is an extension of the many curriculums of study that are offered throughout the school year to meet the diverse needs of our students.

The Maryland Coalition for Gifted and Talented Education (MCGATE) and the Maryland Educators of Gifted Students (MEGS) were community partners in the event.
