Flu Vaccinations For County School Children and Children in Day Care Centers

Starting this Fall season, students in public elementary and academy schools will be vaccinated by the Health Department for seasonal flu in school during the school day. Children currently attending public elementary and academy schools will be offered FluMist®, a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-licensed intranasal influenza vaccine that protects against this year's flu virus strains, including H1N1. This vaccine is not a shot. It is a gentle mist that is sprayed in the nose.

A Dear Parent/Guardian letter with details, Vaccination consent forms, Vaccine Information Sheets (VIS) and a Notice of Privacy Practices in both English and Spanish will be sent home with each student in elementary and academy schools. Parents are encouraged to complete the consent form and return it promptly to their child's school so the school clinic date can be scheduled. Look for a wallet-sized card that will be sent home with your child (Influenza Vaccination Record) to confirm that the child's vaccination was completed.

Children age 9 and under will receive a 2nd vaccine dose in their school at the appropriate time. A 2nd dose Influenza Vaccination packet including the forms above will be sent to the school at a later date.

Private school students, children in day care centers and other school children may obtain vaccinations at publicized Health Department community clinics, local grocery stores, pharmacies or from a private medical provider. Anyone may use online flu shot locators and enter zip code to locate other nearby clinics.
