Eating Good Foods During Pregnancy and Childhood
Good nutrition during pregnancy helps mothers have healthy babies. Good eating habits early in life are key to healthy child development.
The Women, Infant and Children Program (WIC) is a nutrition program for:
- women who are pregnant, have just had a baby, or are breastfeeding
- infants up to one year of age
- children between one year and five years old
WIC provides nutrition education, health care and social service referrals; and vouchers (also called checks) which clients can use to obtain foods that promote healthy child development.
These foods include: milk, cheese, eggs, cereal, peanut butter, dried beans, juice, tuna fish, carrots, infant formula, infant juice and cereal.
To be eligible for WIC in Prince George's County, applicants must be a County resident, meet certain income guidelines, and be at risk for a nutrition related health problem that will be determined by WIC staff during the first appointment.
