The following grant opportunities are available to 501 (c) 3 organizations

Verizon Foundation

Summary:

The purpose of this program is to help people increase their literacy and educational achievement, avoid being an abuser or a victim of domestic violence, and achieve and sustain their health and safety.

Funding priorities include:

  • Education
  • Literacy
  • Domestic violence prevention
  • Healthcare and accessibility
  • Internet safety

Eligible applicants include:

  • Churches
  • Schools
  • Hospitals or medical research organizations
  • Organizations that operate for the benefit or a college or university and are owned or operated by a governmental unit
  • Governmental units
  • Organizations that receive a substantial part of their support from a governmental unit or the general public
  • Organizations that normally receive no more than one-third of their support from gross investment income and unrelated business income
  • Organizations operated solely for the benefit of and in conjunction with organizations described above

Due Date: applications accepted on rolling basis until November 2, 2008.

Tiger Woods Foundation

Program focus areas include education and youth development; Quarterly rolling deadlines; Average grant $2,500 - $25,000.

Target

Provides local store grants. For information on 2008 grant opportunities, log in between February 1, 2008 and October 1, 2008. Focus areas include arts, early childhood reading and family violence prevention. Average grant amount $1,000 - $3,000.

Staples Foundation

The foundation contributes funds to national and local charities that provide educational opportunities and job skills for all people, with an emphasis on disadvantaged youth.

Eligibility
Have a non-profit tax-exempt status under 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code and aligns with the Staples Foundation for Learning’s mission and give focus on job skills and education.

Funding Level
May request up to $25,0000; most grants are in the $5,000 to $25,000 range.

Application deadlines
May 2008 – proposals must be submitted between February 29th and March 14th
September 2008 – Proposals must be submitted between June 2nd and June 16th

WHO Foundation

Women Helping Others (WHO) offers support for grassroots charities serving women and children. The foundation’s priority is funding specific projects and programs addressing health and social service needs, and will consider funding projects of an original or pioneering nature within an existing organization.

Eligibility
Organizations must have 501 (c) (3) non-profit status and be qualified to receive deductible charitable contributions and have been incorporated for a minimum of three years prior to application. Preference is given to organizations with an operating budget of $3 million or less, those not dependent on government grants and those with greater organizational program costs than personnel costs.

Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation

The foundation’s purpose is to provide assistance to projects that offer services to disadvantaged individuals. It is dedicated to assisting the poor, primarily through operating and capital funds to direct service organizations. The foundation seeks to provide shelter, nutrition, health, and socialization in addition to enhancement of individuals’ ability to meet these specific needs. The foundation has a specific focus on the elderly and service to the Jewish community.

Eligibility
501 (c ) (3) non-profit status organizations that carry out their work principally to serve lower-income individuals in the communities in which they reside, and are committed to assisting vulnerable and at-risk populations.

Deadline
Rolling deadline; letters of inquiry accepted throughout the year; if accepted, a full grant proposal will be requested.

Women's Sports Foundation GoGirlGo! Grants

Summary
Provides financial assistance to sports/physical activity programs seeking to add new or expand program participation opportunities for an under-served population of girls, particularly economically disadvantaged girls and/or girls from populations with high incidences of health-risk behaviors. Applicants must provide a minimum eight-week sports/physical activity program with preference given to organizations working consistently with girls throughout the year.
Average Award: $5,700.

Eligibility:
School, amateur, community and/or nonprofit organization whose program members are female, enrolled in 9th through12th grade and residents of the United States. Some area restrictions apply.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation - Building Healthy Teen Relationships

Summary:
The Building Healthy Teen Relationships program will support the creation and evaluation of comprehensive community-based models of prevention that aim to decrease relationship violence and increase positive, protective relationship skills.

Eligibility:
Applicant organizations must be either public entities, such as a unit or department of government or school board or nonprofit organizations that are tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Private foundations as defined under Section 509(a) are not eligible to apply.

Preference will be given to sites that demonstrate specific examples of the following strengths within their proposed partnership:

  • Having experience leading successful collaborative ventures among community-based organizations, government, business and other decision-makers.
  • Demonstrated results that rely on creativity and leadership to address a social issue.
  • Proven track record of engaging youth as leaders.
  • Clear evidence of youth involvement in developing proposal and plans for continued involvement in leading the project.
  • Strong community presence of organizational structures that offer support and resources for youth in need of dating and sexual violence services.

Funding Levels:
Up to eight grants will be awarded for a period of up to 48 months. Each grant award will be up to $250,000 per year, with a maximum award of $1 million for the full grant period.

McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation – Academic Enrichment Program

Summary:  Create enrichment programs that will enable the development of intellectual, artistic and creative abilities in children from low-income households.  The overall goal of this program is to use educational activities to foster understanding, deepen knowledge, and provide opportunities for K-12 students to expand awareness of the world around them.  Successful applicants will be expected to work with an assigned mentor from the foundation to evaluate and influence the project.

Eligibility:  an educator who is:

  • Employed by a school or non-profit organization
  • Has direct regular contact with students in grades K-12 (e.g. public/private school, Boys and Girls Clubs, botanical/zoological gardens, museum education, etc.)
  • Has appropriate background and experience to complete the project successfully
  • Works with students from low-income households
  • Is willing to work in partnership with the Foundation

Funding: 
$5,000 to $10,000 for one to three years provided eligibility requirements continue to be met.

Deadline:  Applications must be postmarked by May 1st.  Award notification by July 15th.

U.S. Soccer Foundation

Pre-Notification:
Anticipated Release Date August 1, 2008.

Summary:
To provide funding for programs or projects that develop and enhance the sport of soccer in the United States with cash and material resources with a focus on economically disadvantaged urban area. There are three program components and potentially the availability of planning grants. To get further information on each component, please go to website.

Eligibility:
Any entity with a soccer-specific program or project that benefits a non-profit purpose, including:

  • Non-profit with 501(c )(3) or 501(c )(7) status
  • Non-profit requesting funds to support a charitable, non-profit purpose
  • Sovereign tribal nations
  • Government agencies
  • Other tax exempt organizations
  • Entities such as churches, faith-based organizations, public and private schools, soccer organizations, and partnerships are also eligible.

Funding:
Maximum award - $100,000; match not required but would like to see institutional support, and matching funds receives competitive advantage in review process.
