Using Commuter Connections

Joining a carpool or vanpool is easy. You can sign up using Commuter Connections' online form or by calling 1-800-486-RIDE. You can also check out Commuter Connections' Bulletin Board to browse through postings from other commuters. Using its extensive network of potential carpool/vanpool partners, Commuter Connections will send you a matchlist containing the names of persons whose commute is similar to your own. To determine which persons would be the best to form a carpool/vanpool with, please see Commmuter Connection's List of Questions.

For more information on how to use the Guaranteed Ride Home service or carpooling and vanpooling, please see the Commuter Connections website or call 1-800-745-RIDE (7433).

Carpooling/Vanpooling

Sharing a ride by carpooling or vanpooling is easy, flexible and can save you thousands of dollars a year in commuting costs, such as mileage, gas, repairs, and parking. By sharing the ride to work with just one other person, you can cut your commuting expenses in half. To find out just how much YOU can save, check out Commuter Connection's special Cost of Commuting. Using its extensive network of potential carpool partners, Commuter Connections will match you with a neighbor whose work location is close to your own. Or, instead of carpooling, you can join a vanpool. Vanpooling has advantages over carpooling, in that many vanpool providers accept Metrochek. Under this program, both Federal and private sector employees can receive public transportation benefits, tax free, from their employer, up to a maximum of $230.00 per month. For additional information, visit the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA) website or call 202-962-1326.

In addition, if you decide to start a new vanpool, Prince George's County Commuter Connections will help you work out the details and find passengers. The driver rides FREE, and any qualifying individual who starts a new vanpool is eligible to receive a start-up subsidy from the County. The Vanpool Subsidy assists new vanpools with at least five passengers that originate or terminate in the County. This three-month subsidy program covers 100 percent of the first month's vehicle rental fee (not to exceed $700.00), 50 percent of the second month (not to exceed $350.00), and 25 percent of the third month (not to exceed $175.00).
