Prince George's County Court House Duvall Wing Fire Restoration Project
January 2006 - January 2008

Photo: Retro Court House PhotoOn Wednesday morning, November 3, 2004, a fire struck the historic Duvall Wing of the Prince George’s County Court House. It destroyed virtually the entire second floor of the three-story portion of the Duvall Wing. What the fire did not destroy, smoke, water and mold quickly did. The results were that much of the interior of the three-story portion of the Duvall Wing had to be demolished down to the bare surfaces of the structural walls. Prince George’s County immediately began planning for its restoration. The three grand limestone columns that framed the entrance to the Courthouse were damaged in the fire have been removed. New limestone are being fabricated and installed.

The restoration project is anticipated to take longer than the first renovation because:

  • Structural and other masonry walls not part of the first renovation had to be repaired or rebuilt
  • The roof, not part of the original renovation, had to be redesigned and reconstructed.
  • All restrooms as well as other interior areas have to be redesigned to bring the entire building into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • All of the mahogany millwork has to be manufactured and installed.
