Prince George's County Court House Duvall Wing Fire Restoration Project

On Wednesday morning, November 3, 2004, a fire struck the historic Duvall Wing of the Prince George’s County Court House. It destroyed virtually the entire second floor of the three-story portion of the Duvall Wing. What the fire did not destroy, smoke, water and mold quickly did. The results were that much of the interior of the three-story portion of the Duvall Wing had to be demolished down to the bare surfaces of the structural walls. Prince George’s County immediately began planning for its restoration.
The project is continuing nicely without any major issues. Re-occupancy is scheduled to occur in March 2009.

All the windows have been replaced and are being fitted with “muntins” to help capture the historic look of this grand building.
A landscape package has been developed that will enhance the exterior grounds. The uneven brick walkways leading to the Courthouse will be removed and replaced with stamped concrete. This will provide a much safer walking path as well as an ADA compliant egress and ingress for persons with disabilities.

The mechanical system has been completed and activated providing conditioned space, allowing all the floor and wall finishes to be applied throughout the building.

Beautiful millwork is being installed and then protected throughout the courthouse and its beauty is nowhere more noticeable than in the judge’s chambers.

The new courtrooms (seven in all) are beginning to take shape and will soon be the location where justice is being decided.

Throughout the building, new clean and modern lounges are being built that will provide aesthetically pleasing and comfortable places for both the employees and visitors to the courthouse.
It will not take long for people returning to the courthouse to immediately notice the improvements. With an ever present attention to security and safety for all, the courthouse will stand out as a public building where everyone can feel secure.
See you in March 2009.
