Adult Services
The Prince George’s County Department of Social Services offers adult resources that are person-centered, community-based and are provided in a manner which recognizes the potential within each individual to participate in community life as responsible and contributing adults.
We respond to cases of suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation of impaired adults. Services are available for persons who are ages 18 or over, who have a physical or mental impairment, and who are not living in a long term care facility (for example, a nursing home).
Adult Protective Services (APS)
The APS Program is an investigative service designed to link with existing adult programs provided by other public, private, and community-based organizations. The goal is to prevent and remedy the abuse and exploitation of dependent and older vulnerable adults, aged 18 and older. The program provides protection and remedial activities on behalf of elders and dependent adults unable to protect their own interests, harmed or threatened with harm, or caused physical or mental injury due to the action or inaction by themselves or other persons. Social Services for Older Adults
This program assists and enables clients with the maintenance of self-sufficiency, promotion of economic self-support, and prevention of abuse, neglect or exploitation. Our services include assessments, the development of individualized service plans, service coordination and community linkages.
Project Home/Certified Adult Residential Environment (C.A.R.E.)
A CARE home provides a protective living environment in a homelike setting for the adult with a disability who cannot live alone primarily due to mental or physical health impairments. Services provided to residents in CARE homes include room, board, and assistance with activities of daily living. Providers also encourage residents to do what they can for themselves and make opportunities for social and recreational activities. There are specific diagnosis requirements to receive services under this program.
Senior Care
This program is a collaborative effort between the Health Department, the Department of Social Services and the Office on Aging. Purchasing "long-term care" services for frail persons over 65 years old who are at risk of institutionalization is the focus of this program.
In-Home Aide Services
An aide is made available in an individual's home to assist with personal care, chores, and/or activities of daily living. The tasks that the aides assist with include: bathing, grooming, transferring, meal preparation, laundry, shopping, light cleaning, transportation and/or escort to appointments, reading mail, etc. Ongoing case management is provided, as well.
Respite Care
Respite care is the provision of short-term, temporary relief to those who are caring for family members who might otherwise require permanent placement in a facility outside the home. This service provides respite care services to caregivers who are caring for a physically, mentally, or emotionally disabled loved one. Access the Respite Care (PDF) application.

Other Adult Services Programs
Reaching Our Senior Adults (R.O.S.A.)
This program provides community outreach in addition to advocacy and education to Seniors who do not meet the criteria of a “vulnerable adult” for an APS investigation but require community resources to sustain a level of independence in the community.
Adult Guardianship Program
By statute, adults who are determined to be legally incompetent between the ages of 18 and 64 are appointed a legal guardian by the courts. If they have no concerned individual, willing to assume guardianship, the Director of the Department of Social Services is appointed as guardian and the Department assumes responsibility to ensure the ward's well-being.
