Council Member Turner Proposes Legislation

CR-93-2008 – On Wednesday, November 5, 2008 the Prince George’s County Council unanimously adopted Council Resolution CR 93-2008, which raises the additional fee for marriage licenses to provide additional funding for domestic violence programs in the County. Council Member Turner proposed the legislation because domestic abuse is a major issue in Prince George’s County and one of great concern. As a Council we want to do everything possible to help victims of Domestic Violence and decrease the number of victims

CB-24-2008- On Wednesday, November 5, 2008 the Prince George County Council enacted Council Bill CB-24-2008. This amends the lot coverage requirement in the R-R Zone under certain circumstances. For the City of Bowie this legislation amends the Residential Lot Coverage and Green Area Table to allow all R-R (Rural Residential) properties containing 15,000 square feet or less, a maximum lot coverage of 30%. This brings the Levitt homes throughout the City of Bowie under consistent regulations. Council Member Turner was happy to propose this legislation on behalf of the City of Bowie.

For further information, or to see the entire resolution or bill, you may access the county website at www.princegeorgescountymd.gov under the legislative section.

District Council case remanded

On October 27, 2008, the District Council in Upper Marlboro ordered a remand and new review of the Harmony Place detailed site plan, SP-07066, for the 15-acre property in the intersection of Northview Drive and MD 197. The Council directed the Planning Board and applicant to revise the plan and articulate the rationale for approval of an apartment community with almost 300 dwellings and only a small group of age-restricted units. The Planning Board and staff were asked to consider the site plan in view of the text of the 2006 Bowie and Vicinity Master Plan, which states that the Harmony Place property is immediately adjacent to County hospital facilities, medical offices, the Bowie New Town Center, and public transportation, making the location ideal for seniors and other residents who seek a mixed-use community less dependent on automobiles. The Council also suggested a reexamination of vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian transportation, and coordination of the many transportation modes that should be made available to community residents. The Planning Board and staff were also asked to obtain further input from the planning department in the City of Bowie, which has worked extensively in the master plan process and with local citizen groups.
