Samuel Ogle Middle School Science Bowl Winners
Council Member Ingrid M. Turner presents Certificates of Recognition to Samuel Ogle Middle School Science Bowl participants in recognition of their Second Place finish in the 2008 Prince George’s County Public Schools Science Bowl (Middle School Division). Olivia Guerrieri, Maxwell Gollin and Brady Collier from Samuel Ogle Middle School, along with their teacher, Mrs. Jeanell Maxwell are pictured with their certificates.
Celebrating “Week Of The Young Child”
Prince George’s County Council Member Ingrid M. Turner presented a Council Proclamation to Ms. Flora Gee and Ms. Lynn Baldwin declaring the week of April 13-19, 2008 the “Week of the Young Child”.
Flora Gee is the Vice President of the Prince George’s County Group Child Care Association and Public Policy Co-Chair for the Maryland Association for the Education of Young Children. Lynn Baldwin is the Executive Director and President of the Prince George’s County Group Child Care Association. Donna Fowler, not pictured, was also recognized. She is the Vice President of the Public Policy of the Maryland State Family Child Care Association.
Council Member Ingrid Turner Hosts Hall Road Library Meeting
Prince George’s County Council Member Ingrid M. Turner (D) – District 4 hosted a Hall Road Library meeting on Thursday, April 17, 2008 at the Bowie Volunteer Fire and Rescue Station at 16408 Pointer Ridge Drive, Bowie, MD 20716. The meeting featured a presentation by County representatives and architects unveiling the updated design and architectural layout of the library. The meeting provided the citizens an opportunity to ask questions and offer viewpoints into the final design of the library. It also provided an opportunity to see the hard work that the community has put forth to make this project come to fruition. The meeting was constructive, insightful and informative and showed that a collaboration of government officials and residents can produce positive results.

Ongoing activities for the Opening of Greenbelt Middle School!
The Prince George’s County Board of Education released information on the progress of improvements for Greenbelt Middle School. The Educational specifications, Schematic Designs, Design Development and all construction documents are underway. The City of Greenbelt , Maryland Historical Trust, The County Department of Environmental Resources, The Board of Education and Council Member Turner are working hard to make sure this project is completed by its scheduled opening date of August 2010.
Financial Assistance for the DTV Conversion
As you may have already heard, after February 17, 2009, all full power television will broadcast only in digital and not analog. If you rely on over the air broadcasts to receive your television programs (No cable or satellite) then this program applies to you. The National Telecommunications & Information Administration of the Department of Commerce is sponsoring the Television Converter Box Coupon Program. This program allows you to receive a coupon that will assist in the purchase of a converter box so that you will be able to continue your television service. Huntington North Park Reopens!!
After routine testing for contaminants, the Huntington North Park (Sandy Hill) is scheduled to reopen for public use. If you have any questions, please refer them to the Prince George’s County Department of Environmental Resources at 301-883-5810.
Lecture on Disabilities by Author Kathy Snow
The Prince George’s County Public Schools Department of Special Education, The Special Education Citizens Advisory Committee of Prince George’s County, The Arc of Prince George’s County Infants and Toddlers Program, & The Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission proudly present Author Kathy Snow. She is the Author of, “Disability is Natural”. She will have two lecture sessions, Friday, May 30, 2008 from 8:30 am-12:00 noon at the Prince George’s Ballroom at 2411 Pinebrook Avenue, Landover, MD 20785. A second lecture will be from 5:30 pm-9:00 pm at The Arc of Prince George’s County, 1401 McCormick Drive, Largo, MD 20774. Nationwide Tour opens new fundraising avenue for non-profit groups
Non-profit organizations in Prince George’s County could rake in hundreds of dollars to help their causes by selling tickets for the Nationwide Tour’s Melwood Prince George’s County Open. The golf tournament will be held May 19-25 at the Country Club at Woodmore in Mitchellville. Non-profits interested in participating should contact the tournament office at 301-599-2732.
County Department of Public Works and Transportation to hold Transit Meetings
The Prince George’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation will hold public meetings concerning the “Transit Service and Operations Plan”. The meetings will be held on May 19, 2008 at Charles Herbert Flowers High School, May 29, 2008 at Drew Freeman Middle School and June 3, 2008 at Northwestern High School. Prince George’s County Office of Central Services to host “Green Purchasing Day”
The Prince George’s County Office of Central Services will host a “Green Purchasing Day” on May 22, 2008 at the RMS Building Conference Room #308 on 1400 McCormick Drive, Largo, MD. The purpose of the meeting is to identify companies with “Green” products and services. Please RSVP by May 18, 2008 because space is limited. Congratulations to Springhill Lake Elementary !!!
Springhill Lake Elementary participated in the 2008 Potomac River Watershed Cleanup and their photo was selected as the winning group participation photo in this year’s cleanup and contest. The photo will be used for next year’s Potomac River Watershed Cleanup flyer and will remain posted on the homepage of www.Fergusonfoundation.org until next year’s winners are declared. Thanks for your hard work and commitment at an early age to show an interest in the environment.

Giant Food Stores to raise refund for use of reusable bags!!
The 30 year reusable bag refund where customers receive a refund on their grocery bill for every reusable bag has now been raised from 3 cents to 5 cents. For every shopping bag a customer brings from home to use for packaging their groceries, a five cent deduction per bag will be taken from the total bill. Giant will also be partnering with General Mills to encourage the use of reusable bags for any customer purchasing $15 worth of General Mills products by providing a coupon for 5 free reusable bags to help reduce the reliance on paper and plastic bags. The General Mills promotion runs through May 9, 2008.
County Council Public Hearings
The Prince George’s County Council will hold public hearings to discuss the Prince George’s County FY 2009 Operating Budget. The dates and topics are as follows:
Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at 7:00 pm: Operating Budget, Capital Improvement Plan, Board of Education, Redevelopment Authority, Revenue Authority, Industrial Development Authority of Prince George’s County and the Constant Yield Tax Rate.
Monday, May 12, 2008 at 7:00 pm: Public Hearing on the Amendments, Adopted Capitol Heights Transit District Development Plan and Endorsed Transit District Overlay Zoning Map Amendment.
Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at 7:00 pm: (Same agenda as May 7, 2008)
Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 10:00 am: the following bills and resolutions will be discussed:
